How to Play Word Search
Word Search is the world's favorite paper puzzle, now in your browser: words are hidden in the grid along eight directions — horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and sometimes backwards. Press and drag across every letter of a word to mark it found. Found words stay highlighted and are crossed off the list; find them all to finish. Every round is a freshly generated puzzle, timed for speedruns.
Find Words Faster
- Hunt rare letters: pick words with uncommon letters like Z, Q or X — locating one rare letter beats scanning row by row.
- Scan by direction: sweep rows first for forward words, then columns, then diagonals — pass by pass so nothing slips by.
- Read backwards too: words can run right-to-left and bottom-to-top. If forward fails, read in reverse.
Invented for One Small Oklahoma Paper
The word search is surprisingly young: the first published puzzle is credited to Norman Gibat, who printed a "word seek" in 1968 in the Selenby Digest, a small shopping paper in Norman, Oklahoma. Local teachers started photocopying it for their classrooms the same week, and within a few years the format was running in newspapers around the world under names like Word Seek and Word Find.
Its staying power comes from a pleasant trick your brain plays on itself: hunting for a word letter by letter quietly drills spelling and vocabulary, all while feeling like pure pattern spotting. The reliable scanning habits are simple — sweep line by line in one direction at a time, and for each word on the list, anchor on its most unusual letter rather than its first one, because Q, J, X and doubled letters are far rarer on a grid than A, S or E.
자주 묻는 질문
How do I play Word Search?
Press on a word's first letter and drag in a straight line to its last letter. Horizontal, vertical, diagonal, forwards or backwards all count. Found words highlight and get crossed off the list.
How many words per puzzle?
Each puzzle hides 9 words; find them all to finish. Every New Puzzle generates a completely fresh random grid.
I can't find the last word — help!
Try scanning in a different direction, or hunt for the word's rarest letter first. The word is definitely in the grid — patience wins.
Is Word Search good for you?
It trains visual search, concentration and vocabulary — a gentle brain workout for all ages and a fun way to practice English words.
Is there a time limit in Word Search?
No — the puzzle waits for you. The list only disappears when you have found every word, so you can take a difficult grid one direction at a time, leave it, and come back with fresh eyes. Many players find the last stubborn word within seconds of returning.
What is the fastest way to find hidden words?
Anchor on rare letters instead of reading every cell: for each word, look for its most distinctive letter — an unusual consonant or a double letter — then check whether the rest of the word crosses that spot. Save the diagonals for last, and search each direction separately rather than all at once.
