Yahtzee Rules
Yahtzee is played with 5 dice over 13 turns. Each turn you may roll up to 3 times, clicking dice to hold them between rolls, then bank the result into one of 13 scoring categories — each usable only once per game. The upper section (Ones through Sixes) scores the sum of matching dice; reaching 63 up there earns a +35 bonus. The lower section offers Three of a Kind (sum of all dice), Four of a Kind, Full House (25), Small Straight (30), Large Straight (40), Yahtzee — five of a kind (50) — and Chance (sum of everything). After all 13 boxes are filled, your total is your final score.
Strategy Tips
- Protect the upper section: the +35 bonus at 63 is worth nearly half a game — stock up on fours, fives and sixes.
- Don't chase Yahtzees: 50 points is tempting but rare; treat it as a bonus, not a plan.
- Use Chance as a safety net: dump your worst rolls into Chance or Ones to save the big boxes.
- Chase big hands early in the turn: settle for less only on the last roll.
A Yacht, a Scorepad, a Classic
Yahtzee's closest ancestor is "Yacht", a public-domain dice game played for decades before a Canadian couple approached game marketer Edwin Lowe in 1956, asking him to print scorepads for their yacht-parties favorite. Lowe branded it The Yacht Game, then Yahtzee — and made it famous less through advertising than through the shrewdest of promotion: hosting "Yahtzee parties" in people's homes. It has been a household name ever since, its thirteen-round structure unchanged.
The design's beauty is that luck only sets the menu; you choose the meal. Thirteen boxes, thirteen decisions, and the eternal tension of filling the hard boxes early or banking safe points now. The upper-section bonus hangs over everything like a slow countdown — chase it with discipline, or abandon it decisively and build your score in the bottom half. Both plans win games; dithering loses them.
Вопросы и ответы
How do I play Yahtzee?
Roll up to 3 times per turn, holding dice you like, then score the hand into one of 13 categories. After 13 turns, highest total wins.
What's the upper-section bonus?
If your Ones-through-Sixes subtotal reaches 63, you get +35 — that's an average of three of each face.
What is a Yahtzee?
All five dice showing the same face — worth 50 points, the single biggest box in the game.
Is my best score saved?
Yes — your highest total is stored locally in your browser.
What order should I fill my scorecard in Yahtzee?
Decide about the upper-section bonus in the first three rounds: if your opening rolls are strong on high numbers, commit to chasing the 63-point bonus; if they are not, commit to scoring big in the lower section and use the upper boxes as scrap. The losing path is usually indecision between the two plans.
What should I do with a terrible roll in Yahtzee?
Take the re-rolls you are allowed and, if nothing materializes, deliberately sacrifice a box you are least likely to need later — a low single number in the upper section, or a small straight slot late in the game. Scratching a box on purpose is a skill; scrapping randomly is how games are lost.
