How to Play 2048
2048 is a classic sliding number puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. Every move slides all tiles in one direction; when two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into their sum (2+2=4, 4+4=8, and so on). After each move, a new 2 or 4 appears in a random empty cell. The game ends when the board is full and no merges remain. Reach the 2048 tile to win — then keep going for an even higher score!
2048 Tips for a Higher Score
- Pick a corner: keep your largest tile in one corner (e.g. bottom-left) and avoid moving it.
- Use only three directions: avoid the key that pushes your biggest tile out of its corner.
- Build a snake: arrange tiles in descending order from the corner so merges chain naturally.
- Keep cells empty: prioritize open space over short-term points so small tiles never trap you.
The Story Behind 2048
2048 began in March 2014 as a weekend project by Italian web developer Gabriele Cirulli, who wanted to see if he could build a game in JavaScript. Inspired by the earlier titles 1024 and Threes!, he released his version free and open source — and within weeks it had been played millions of times and spawned hundreds of variants. Part of its lasting appeal is how honest the math is: every merge doubles a tile, every point is earned, and there is no luck in the tiles you're handed, only in how you arrange them.
Our version stays true to that original simplicity. Nothing to install, no sign-up, and your best score is stored right in your browser, so you can come back tomorrow and try to beat yourself.
الأسئلة الشائعة
How do you play 2048?
Use the arrow keys or swipe to slide all tiles in one direction. Tiles with the same number merge when they collide. A new tile appears after every move — reach the 2048 tile to win.
Who invented 2048?
2048 was created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in 2014. Inspired by 1024 and Threes!, the open-source game became a worldwide hit within weeks.
Can I play 2048 on my phone?
Yes! The game fully supports touch swipes on phones and tablets as well as keyboards on desktop — no app download required.
Can I keep playing after reaching 2048?
Yes. Choose "Keep going" to chase 4096, 8192 and an even higher score.
How is my score calculated in 2048?
Every merge adds the value of the newly created tile to your score: merging two 4s gives you 8 points, two 64s give you 128 points, and so on. Making two merges in a single move counts twice, which is why efficient moves that set up chains raise your score faster.
What is the highest tile possible in 2048?
On the standard 4×4 board, the largest reachable tile is 131,072 (2 to the 17th power) — but that requires a nearly perfect game. Reaching the 2048 tile puts you in good company; anything beyond 4096 is an excellent run.
